This incredibly scenic tour follows lightly traveled rural roads deep into the cultural museum that is Pennsylvania's Dutch countryside, located in the southeast quadrant of our state. Ride along the rolling terrain that carries you from our start in Hamburg down into the heart of Amish country, far from the hub bub and noise of the tourist destinations. You'll feel as if you pedaled back a hundred years in time. The tour then moves up through the gorgeous Oley and Lehigh Valleys, skirting Hawk Mountain on its way back to the start and our cars.
Amish Back Roads Bicycling Tour - Special Edition Maximum 30 people
The quiet, buggy filled back roads of Amish Country are full of surprises. Among them are some truly fantastic inns and bed & breakfasts that are too small to accommodate our regular Amish Back Roads tour. We've incorporated these delightful morsels into our regular route to create a very special version of that tour. New to the route this year are the charming Amish View Inn and Suites in Bird In Hand, and the Churchtown Inn Bed and Breakfast which joins the Inn at Twin Linden in Churchtown. Then of course there's always the spectacular Glasbern Country Inn in Foglesville.
The gentle rolling hills of Amish country will put you in High Spirits as you pedal past farms generations old and still worked with horses. Along the way you'll visit two wineries, America's oldest religious community, learn The Beer Song and party either at the Great Eastern Invitational Micro Brew Festival hosted by Stoudt's brewery or deep in the catacombs of Bube's Brewery. These five rollicking days of play will whet your appetite for more High Spirits.
Can't get away for a whole week? Then take a short break from your schedule and join us for a relaxing weekend of sweet rural roads with a little history and sight seeing tossed in. Pedal past one room school houses and horse-ploughed farms handed down for generations. We'll visit Ephrata Cloisters, one of the country's first religious communities, and ride through Intercourse, PA, where you're sure to see plenty of buggies. Dine in an Amish home, sleep in a room where you can draw back the curtains and take in the lush Amish farmland, cows lazily grazing in a nearby pasture, and a one-room schoolhouse on the horizon. You'll know you've ridden back in time when the telephone poles disappear.
The hills that border the Delaware River have a long history as a premier resort destination. Along the way there will be lakes, streams and waterfalls, historic villages and mansions, breath taking vistas and, most likely sightings of wild life. That's during the day. At night we'll stay in a delightful collection of intriguing and historic inns, each chosen for its unique place in the history of these hills.
Get away for two or a for a few. There's so much great cycling here that we've stretched the weekend, just for you. You can ride two, three or four days. And don't fret about the hills. Any fit cyclist will be fine here. We're going to the town of Water Gap, PA and staying in the very historic, very magical and newly restored Deer Head Inn, a Mecca for Jazz artists since the 1950's. You can join us early on Thursday for our optional cue sheet ride, come later in the day and ride with us Friday as well. Or catch up with us later Friday and join us for our weekend rides on Saturday and Sunday. Regardless, you'll love the roads, love the views and love our Water Gap Weekend.
